Greys Anatomy Helps Make Juju a Trendy Expression

Our grass-roots apparel brand is getting a little help spreading our vibe from one of Americas favorite TV shows. The Sunday March 19, 2006 episode of Greys Anatomy, starring Boston native Ellen Pompeo as the lead character Dr. Meredith Grey, helped us define one of our underpinning concepts of spreading good Juju.

As the cast in this Seattle based hospital drama was struggling with their own superstitious notions surrounding the loss of three patients, one character, Greys romance rival Dr. Addison Shepherd, starring Kate Walsh, offers up cups of cocoa in a ritual to bring good Juju to the team. The expression subsequently ends up as part of the focus of the episode as nearly every character, including an obsessive compulsive patient who had to say the word dozens of times, used it in their own way to define their take on superstitions.

For TZ Tees, well, it was the kind of good Juju we hoped would return to us. Using the word in our promotion efforts and on two of our unique How's Your Juju? Tee shirts, weve often needed to clear up its definition for people. I couldnt believe my ears, said TZ Tees founder and President David Strand of Newburyport. Some people unfamiliar with the expression have joked that it made them think dirty. While weve enjoyed some smiles due to its evocative nature, we expect people to gravitate to it even more now that theyve heard it on the show.

Already helping to raise over $5,000 for local charities by giving back upwards of 25% of sales, our brand hopes to broaden our giving throughout the area. Our thanks go to the writers and producers of Grey's Anatomy for the good Juju.

Greys Anatomy airs Sundays at 10PM eastern time on ABC.

Shirts So Good

Merrimack River Current
By Dinah Cardin

Some very special T-shirts increasingly have been showing up at area school functions, so the table selling TZ Tees at the Newburyport Education Foundation's Adult Spelling Bee already had a fan base. Since last spring, sales of the shirts have generated funds for the NEF, the local high school marching band and a scholarship fund for Newburyport High graduates in the name of Trista Zinck, a student struck and killed in 2003 by a drunk driver.

David Strand owns his own marketing company and started the T-shirt company. It already has raised more than $3,000 by donating 25 percent of the proceeds from sales.

"I had one of those life-is-too-short moments after that," he says of the accidents that took the lives of two TZs: Zinck, whom he did not know, and his friend Tom "TZ" Zinkowsky, killed in a motorcycle accident.

The idea behind what Strand calls his "grassroots apparel brand" is to create a perpetually building wave of good vibes (JuJu) and let it spread throughout the community via original T-shirt designs. JuJu, the company's Web site explains, is a cool-sounding, voodoo word that loosely translates as "the spirit dwelling within," a sort of second cousin to "mojo." One of the popular T-shirt slogans is "How's Your JuJu?"

Local students intern for Strand, selling the shirts kids will wear with a label that just might make them think.

T-shirts spread some healthy JuJu

By Adam Martignettii
Staff Writer, Newburyport Daily News

Hot off the T-shirt press: fresh JuJu.

The word, rooted in African beliefs that some objects have mythical powers, relates to positive vibes. TZ Tees, an apparel company based at 10 Railroad St., is using the term on its shirts to spread those vibes by donating 25 percent of all its profits to local charitable causes.

The company's newest shirts will help benefit the Trista Zinck Scholarship Fund, which was set up in honor of the Newburyport High School sophomore killed in a hit-and-run accident almost two years ago.

Jamie Connor, a classmate of Zinck's and a graphic design intern at the company, designed the shirts. Maxine Labbe, a fellow senior at Newburyport High School, will be helping market them during the holiday season.

The goal, according to founder David Strand, is to have everyone in town buy a shirt for someone in their family.

"My friend Tom Zinkowsky and I always wanted to invent a really cool company that made money, but also gave back to the local community," Strand said.

When Zinkowsky's death was followed shortly by Zinck's, the fledgling company took its name from their initials.

Connor, who has been with TZ Tees since its beginning, designed both the male and female versions of the JuJu shirts, which bear the motto, "How's Your JuJu?"

The pink, female version features a heart, outlined by white lace and adorned at the top by three roses. The male version has a blue, two-sided pitchfork running through the slogan.

Connor used ink and paper to draw the designs, but has learned Freehand, a graphic illustration program created by Macromedia, during her internship.

"I spent a lot of time on those," Connor said of the JuJu shirts. "I knew I wanted experience in graphic design. I went into this to learn how to use a graphic illustrator."

Labbe picks up where Connor's work leaves off. Her marketing internship has taught her about writing press releases and tracking customers through databases. Labbe said her time at TZ Tees has convinced her she wants to pursue a career in marketing and public relations when she goes to college.

The JuJu shirts have only recently been printed, but TZ Tees has had success with its "Sox Rock" design created after the Red Sox won the World Series. The profits from those shirts benefit the Newburyport High School Marching Band.

"The 'Sox Rock' shirt is popular," said Labbe. "I see kids around school wearing those a lot because the band is selling it. But my favorite is the Juju (sometimes spelled ju-ju or ju ju) shirt that Jamie did."

To date, TZ Tees has raised more than $2,500 for its charitable partners, which also include the Newburyport Education Fund and the Berklee College of Music and Theatre, which Strand's niece attends.

TZ merchandise can be purchased online at tztees.com or at various local retail outlets.
